About GITagRegistry
What GITagRegistry is
GITagRegistry is an independent, free guide to the Geographical Indication (GI) tagged products of India. For each product it explains where it comes from, what makes it distinctive, how to recognise the genuine article and where to buy it. It is written for shoppers, travellers, students, teachers and anyone curious about the regional products behind the label.
Who it is for
Buyers use the site to learn what to look for before paying for a silk sari, a box of saffron or a hand-painted panel. Travellers use the state pages to plan which towns to visit for a particular craft or sweet. Students and teachers use the category and About pages as a plain-language introduction to how GI protection works in India. Producers and cooperatives may find it useful as a reference for how their products are described to the public.
What it is not
This website is not the official Geographical Indications Registry. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the Government of India, the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, or any producer association. The name describes the subject of the site. The only authoritative record of a registration is the register and GI Journal published by the GI Registry in Chennai, and you should rely on it for any legal or commercial purpose.
How the catalogue is built
The catalogue combines a working dataset of product names, states and categories with written profiles prepared by our editors from general reference knowledge. Recently registered products reported in the press are kept in a separate list and are clearly marked when details such as a registration number are still unconfirmed. Price ranges and buying tips are guides, not quotations, and they vary between sellers and seasons. Photographs on the site are currently placeholders and will be replaced with credited images over time.
Editorial standards
We try to state only what we can support. Where we do not know a fact, we say so instead of filling the gap with something plausible. Historical accounts that rest on local tradition are described as tradition, not as settled history. Product pages give practical tests for spotting imitations, but no test is perfect, and we encourage buyers to use cooperatives, government emporia and established makers wherever possible.
Accuracy and corrections
Registrations change, names are spelt in several ways and craft practices differ between makers, so mistakes are possible. Registration numbers and price ranges shown here come from compiled datasets and should be confirmed with the official register before commercial or legal use. If you find an error, or you are a producer who wants a listing corrected or expanded, please write to us with the page address and, if possible, a public source, and we will review it.
Advertising and independence
At launch this site does not sell products, carry advertising or accept payment for listings. If that ever changes, we will say so on this page and label any sponsored or affiliate content clearly, so that it does not blur into the editorial guidance.
