About Santiniketan Ektara
Santiniketan Ektara is a one-string folk instrument made in the Santiniketan area of Birbhum, West Bengal. The name means one string. A single string is stretched over a hollow body, often a gourd or a wooden bowl covered with skin, fixed to a bamboo neck, and plucked to give a rhythmic drone. It is closely tied to the Baul singers of Bengal, who use it to accompany devotional and philosophical songs.
Heritage and place
Baul music is a wandering mystic song tradition of Bengal, and the tradition has been recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Birbhum, home of Santiniketan and its famous winter Poush Mela, remains one of the places where Baul singers gather and perform. The ektara is the instrument most people picture with them. The GI, reported as registered in 2026, links the name to the instruments made in Santiniketan.
How it is made
Makers hollow out a gourd or shape a wooden resonator, cover the opening with a thin skin, and fix a split bamboo pole through the body. A string runs from a tuning peg at the top to the body. The player squeezes the two halves of the neck together to raise or lower the pitch while plucking. Small differences in size and materials change the tone considerably, so each maker's instruments have a character of their own.

What to check
Decide whether you want to play it or display it. Playable ektaras should have a firmly attached skin, a straight neck that moves smoothly and a clear, sustained drone when plucked, while decorative ones may look the same but sound dull. Ask the maker to play it before you buy, and keep it away from damp, which slackens the skin. As the GI is new, check the seller's authorised-user status in the GI Journal.
- General guidance, not the registered specification: a playable ektara has a firmly attached skin, a smooth-moving bamboo neck and a clear sustained drone; ask the maker to play it. The registration was reported in 2026, so confirm authorised sellers in the GI Journal.
