About Ponduru Khadi

Ponduru Khadi is hand-spun and handwoven cotton cloth from Ponduru in Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh. It is the most widely known of the six newly reported registrations in this catalogue. Reports describe cloth made from a short-staple, pest-resistant hill cotton, and the fabric is prized for its softness, fine yarn and comfortable drape in hot weather.

Heritage and place

Khadi carries special meaning in India because of its role in the freedom movement, and Ponduru is often mentioned among the centres associated with fine hand-spun cotton. Spinning and weaving have provided livelihoods, especially for women. A GI recognises the local cotton and craft, though the exact registration details are not yet included in this dataset and should be confirmed in the GI Journal.

How it is made

In general, khadi begins with cleaning and carding cotton, which is then spun on a charkha (spinning wheel) into yarn and woven on a handloom. Fine counts need skilled spinners and a light hand. The cloth is often washed and left in its natural off-white, or dyed with natural colours. This describes general khadi practice, not the specific GI specification.

What to check

Genuine khadi has slightly irregular texture and small slubs, and it softens with washing. Look for the Khadi India mark or a certified khadi institution's tag, since powerloom cloth is sometimes sold as khadi. Ask if the cloth is from Ponduru and whether it is hand-spun. Buy from certified khadi bhandars and cooperatives, and confirm the GI entry in the official records because it was only recently registered.
