About Assam
Assam lies in the Brahmaputra valley, a river-carved plain edged by the Himalayan foothills and the Barak valley to the south. It is home to many communities, including Assamese, Bodo, Dimasa, Karbi and Mising peoples, whose festivals such as Bihu shape the calendar. The landscape produces tea, silk and rice in abundance, and Majuli, one of the world's largest river islands, is a centre of Vaishnavite culture.
Crafts, food and farm traditions
Assam's GI listing is unusually rich in agricultural and craft products. It includes the golden Muga silk, aromatic Joha rice, Boka Chaul (mud rice), the Kaji Nemu lemon and Assam orthodox tea, alongside Majuli mask making and the community drink Judima. Many of these products come from smallholders and community traditions rather than large industries, and the GI is often the first formal recognition of their value.
Visiting and buying
To buy well, look for Assam's government emporia, weavers' cooperatives around Sualkuchi and farmer producer groups, and check labels for origin and grade. Tea is best purchased from named estates, while silk needs a Silk Mark. Alcohol, such as Judima, should only be bought through licensed channels. This page collects the Assam products in this catalogue with authenticity guidance for each.
Best time to go and practical notes
October to April is the most comfortable period for visiting, and Guwahati is the main gateway. Sualkuchi, the silk weaving town, is a short trip from Guwahati, while Majuli is reached by ferry from Jorhat, and the large tea estates cluster around Jorhat and Dibrugarh. The Bihu festivals, in January and April, fill markets with handloom and food. Monsoon flooding between June and September can close roads and ferry routes.
